SCDOR agents arrested a Greenville County man on Thursday and charged him with four counts of Income Tax evasion and three counts of failure to file and pay taxes.
Richard Matthew Wells, 44, of Simpsonville, is accused of failing to file a state Income Tax Income Tax return for tax years 2018-2024, as was required by law based on his gross income. For tax years 2021-2024, Wells filed a statement with his employer claiming to be exempt from state Income Taxes, which caused no state Income Tax to be withheld from his paycheck.
According to warrants, Wells’s unreported income for 2018-2024 totals more than $632,000. He evaded a total of $26,426 in South Carolina Income Tax.
If convicted, Wells faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for each count of tax evasion. He faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for the charge of failing to file a state tax return. He is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
