SCDOR warns of ongoing text message scam

Thursday, Oct 23, 2025

The SCDOR warns South Carolinians to watch out for text messages claiming to be from the SCDOR and asking for personal or financial information. These text messages are scams. The SCDOR will never text you asking for sensitive data.

If you receive a text message claiming to be from the SCDOR and asking for your personal or financial information:

  • Delete the text message from your phone immediately.
  • Do not click on any links.
  • Do not share your personal or financial information.
  • Report the text message to your mobile carrier, the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, and the Federal Trade Commission. You also can call Consumer Affairs at 800-922-1594.
  • Contact your banking institution if you did click a suspicious link or share your personal or financial information.

What to watch for:

One text scam that was recently reported to the SCDOR falsely promises recipients a refund if they click a link and provide the requested information by October 29, 2025. The recipient is told that they will forfeit this money if they don’t submit their information by the deadline. Again – this text message is a scam.

We’re here to help!
